abc.com - Why are they blocking Canadians?
Author: Aimee
As a person who watches a lot of ABC shows like Grey’s Anatomy, October Road, Ugly Betty, Dancing with the Stars and others, I was very excited when I heard that all of these shows were available online anytime I wanted to watch them. Once I logged on, I was dissapointed to find out that they were only available to people within the United States.
This is so not fair! They show commercials with these online tv shows, why can’t I watch them? Allowing them to be viewed by people around the world would give more exposure to their sponsors. Do I not have money? If you show me an advertisement, will I not go out and buy stuff?
I think as Canadians (and people outside the US) we should take a stand against this injustice! Contact ABC and tell them that you want to watch their shows online!

I totally agree with you. I am from America and I am able to watch these shows and it is great because I can’t get to all of them. This is nice because it gives me a chance to watch shows I can’t always watch because of a busy schedule. I will support your cause. Why do you think they don’t do that?

I agree this is one of my pet peeves. I think it is done for the advertisers who pay per impression.
Maybe the problem is there are no Canadian advertisers?

Gary, it’s because TV stations outside of the USA buy the exclusive rights to the program and would lose viewers to the online version of the show and thus their own ad revenue.
Good or bad, that’s why.

My situation is even stranger. I get pan-Asian and global TV programs (I am in Thailand)but the ads are censored out. I have not figured out why yet.

You could be right Gary, so maybe what we need is a Canadian network that will offer the shows online; like on the City TV website for example.
