#1 tip when starting a blog to make money on-line

Filed under: Make Money Online — Jason @ 4:56 pm

I am about to reveal a secret here eveyone. This is something a lot of other people do not want you to know. This information will save you so much time and frustration when starting out that you will want to give me your first born in thanks.

First, think about why you want to start making money on-line. You heard all kinds of storeys that others are doing it. You read a ton of the blogs about people like John Chow and Shoemoney and you know you can do it too. You read the latest tip about how they are making a ton with this new program, or that new method. You dream of how you are going to do the same thing and spend hours every day reading every word they write and view pictures of every meal they eat.

You really need to stop that. Seriously.

You are wasting your time if you are just starting out. Those are established blogs, and they already have the traffic to make money. You do not. You need traffic. Take all those hours you spend reading other blogs and put it into creating content for yours. Stop worrying about adsense and where you are going to put it. Stop thinking about selling any type of advertising period.

Write. Write your content. Write to your niche or chosen topic*. Keep writing, and find your voice. Write some more. Thats it. Do not try anything else yet, just create a writing schedule and stick to it. Do this for weeks or even months if you have to.

Nothing else really matters. If you cannot consistantly produce content, there really is no point. If you are writing about something that bores you, again, no point. No one is going to buy any advertising on a site with no content, and no one is going to visit a site with no passion.

So get started, I’ll let you know what to do next with tip #2 a little later.

*Please don’t start another ‘how to make money online’ blog unless that is truly your passion and you are not expecting to make any money from it.

    PageRank is dying

Filed under: Make Money Online — Jason @ 3:13 pm

At least that what it seems like. With both Problogger and John Chow dropping to a 4 it seems the days of pagerank are numbered. I think it’s been broken for awhile now. Here is a fantastic idea… get rid of it. What does it really do, and who the hell is it to rank my site?

How about we do what we should be doing when selling advertising and use your traffic stats? Who cares about anything else really. It’s your site, you should know what your stats are. Just go from there and sell your ads.

Now I realize that it’s easier if everyone has the same set of numbers to go by, but it’s broken and can be screwed around with anyway. Look at this site, we still don’t even have a pagerank yet, and it looks like we never will.

Google already has enough control over the internet anyway right?

I like to touch your blogs private places

Filed under: Make Money Online — Jason @ 9:25 am

OK, after a whole bunch of revisions that I didn’t like, I went the simplest route possible with my pet directory project. At least for now, if for some reason it actual proves to be useful to some people, I may put a little more into it.

But really, I did not want it to be over-crowded or hard on the eyes or annoying to use. So now I am just going to launch it and see what happens. Now I just need to fill it up!

    Blog Frisker

Thats where you come in. If you have a blog, or know of a blog that should be included, please stop by and fill out the form to add it in. Every blog will be added, but it will be reviewed first and if it sucks, I have no problem saying so. Anyway, go on over to the BlogFrisker and give me some blogs to index.

When I grow up, I want to be a whore too!

Filed under: Make Money Online — Jason @ 3:25 pm

Ok, I want to try something and I could use your help. I want to become a sell-out. A complete and total, right down to the very core sell-out. My opinion, look and feel, every word and thought that comes out of my head. I want money, and I am willing to do and say anything to get it.

Well, maybe that got away from me a little. I want to do an experimental site doing just that. Doing every little thing I can think of to earn money by selling my opinion and every word on the site. I will plug any and everything on it. I will sell the look and feel. Anything goes.

Now is the time to try out any little dirty whore-ish thing I, or you can think of. Got an idea or something you always wanted to try but were afraid the results would be negative? I’ll do it for you, let you know the results here on the site, and give you credit if you want it. Now remember this though, I won’t do or show anything against the law.

Everything else goes, now first I need an URL. I really “obviously a sell-out” URL. Any suggestions? If I use your suggestion, I will give you… something… don’t know what yet, but it will be quite wonderful…

Is writing Bullshit good enough to keep your readers?

Filed under: Make Money Online — Jason @ 7:03 am

I’ve always wondered this. Are fluff and bullshit posts good enough to keep people satisfied until your next good post? I read a lot of blogs, and most blogs have good posts, just not everyday. A lot of them post crap filler posts quite frequently.

Now, let me explain what crap filler is. They are the sorta on-topic posts that are very broad and general. I’ll do a quick example here:

3 Tips to improve your blog!

    1. Stay healthy. Making sure you eat right and get your excercise will make sure you have the energy to write those posts.

    2. Get enough sleep. This way you don’t fall asleep while working.

    3. Stretch. Keeping yourself limber will help prevent cramps during those long post writing sessions.

Follow these tips and you will have a great blog in no time!

If you read any blogs anywhere, I know you have seen this kind of junk all over the place. I was surprised at first that posts like this actually got comments, but I figure it’s one of two types of people. Those that are idiots, or those that are trying to get the top comments award.

So here is my question. Does this thing count as a post to you? Do you appreciate this crap as at least it is something, or would you rather the writer just wait until they had something to say?

Also, would these posts help yoiur rankings at all? Besides filling them with keywords, it will show your blog as being more active. Does that have any bearing in the SERP’s at all?

Please put you big Blog and my hot Directory

Filed under: Make Money Online — Jason @ 9:13 am

As some may already know, I wanted to build a little directory for blogs. Mostly for the fun of it, as I would get to see a bunch of new blogs. But also to see if I could make it successful. By that I mean some people might actually use it for something other than a place to put a link back to their blog.

So now I have finally decided to put some time into it. I’m going to try and add 10 or so blogs a day as I need to review each one first. The descriptions of the blogs in the directory are going to be written by me so I need to look at them to form an opinion.

Now I am sure I will get to everyone on MyBlogLog who is a member of foximus, or one of my friends. But, if you have a site, or know of a site that should be included please let me know. Just use our contact form.

It does not matter what tyoe of blog it is, and it does not have to be good. If it’s adult, please let me know in the e-mail so I only open it when I am alone, late at night, after a few drinks… Anyway, any help would be appreciated, and I’ll let you all know the URL once there is at least enough stuff in there to look at.

Not updating your blog will kill it…. fast… here’s the proof

Filed under: Make Money Online — Jason @ 9:48 am

Ok, we have all heard how important it is to update our blogs regularly. We’ve all been told you will loose readers very quickly if you don’t. Well, for the month of August we really did not update anything. Both Aimee and I got really busy and I got a little burnt out because of so many things I was working on at once. Bite off a lot more than I could chew if you will. Plus, I wanted a lot of quality time with friends and family which I was not getting because of so much work.

Anyway, so what really happened to the site as far as visitors go? I wasn’t gone that long right?

I am just going to give you one stat from the site and you can see what happened.

    Hits for July 2007 = 299481
    Hits for August 2007 = 71345
    Difference between = 228136

Yikes, that is huge. But are we done? No sir, we are not. Now say we take into account that we were more than doubleing our number every month. For this example we kept up with the trend and we doubled up.

Hits for August should have been = 598962
    Difference between = 527617

Now that is huge! Half a million hits gone. So if you ever need some proof, or motivation to update and you care about your stats at all, now you have it. Not updated your blog regularly really will kill it fast.

    150 posts later…

Filed under: Make Money Online — Jason @ 2:55 pm

Well, it’s been a fun two months and I thought I would give an update to how things are going. Aimee and I just passed the 150 post mark and we are still going! Although not much yet, here is what we have done to promote the fox so far.

    • MyBlogLog. You may have seen the fox running around on some of your sites.
    • We try to regularly comment on the few blogs we read daily
    • We have done 4 reviews for link backs
    • Participated in one link train, and one viral link campaign

Thats it really. No SEO, no buying/begging for links. No submitting every story to digg/reddit/netscape. Very little promotion at all. We really have been concentrating on learning and developing our writing style. Anyway, some fun numbers for you all to chew!

Google PR = 0! (we expect this to go up during the next update)
    Technorati Rank = 48,065!
    Alexa = 415,232
Traffic = June has a %300 increase over May already!

We are also in all the search engines in one way or another. So I guess the ‘build it and they will come’ holds true, at least a little bit.

But these numbers are not good enough. July shall be promotion month for us! We shall seek out any and all ways to promote the fox and drive traffic here. We shall continue to grow! We shall be relentless! This is Sparta!!

Anyway, I have a favour to ask. Give me ideas. Sure I can find ways to do it myself. Or possibly create my own but I’m sure some of you already have some knowledge on the subject. I am willing to try anything as long as it does not cause someone else to lose anything. Be it money, bandwidth or anything else. I will try any crazy idea, report what happened and give you the credit (and I won’t blame you if it blows).

Just use the contact form to get in touch with me.

    Gaming MyBlogLog for free advertising?

Filed under: Make Money Online — Jason @ 11:58 am

NOTE: This is just an opinion of mine. It is in regards to this post here. if you haven’t seen it yet you may want to so that this post makes sense to you.

The basic premise of the technique is to get your MyBlogLog avatar to always show up on a A-list blog for free advertising. You do this by have a auto-refresh plugin for your browser so that your avatar is always on top.

Sounds like a simple process right? Well, not only does MyBlogLog take steps to prevent this from happening, it is just plain evil and wrong. Let me explain.

First, who the hell are you to try and game my site and get yourself listed on it for free? Other people pay good money for a link on a blog, but you want to game the system so you don’t have to? And this is coming from a site on how to make money on-line, yet they are giving this sort of advice?

Lets not forget that if this actually worked, that is one less spot for others avatars to show up, and you are also burning up the owners bacnwidth that they pay for! Thats just fantastic. Not only am I going to get free advertising on your site, I’m going to make you pay for it.

I mean there is evil, then there is just unethical. And trying to justify it in any way by doing it to a blogger you don’t like does not make it any better. Maybe I am just not evil enough for these types of things, but I am trying to learn how to make money, not cheat others out of theirs.

Case study: Comment whoring, is it worth it?

Filed under: Make Money Online — Jason @ 2:47 pm

First, let me explain what this experiment was all about just so we are all clear. Basically, I was going to find a whole list of sites that have NoFollow turned off so that I could post a bunch of comments to get some links back here.

Sounds like a very simple process. It is not hard to find a DoFollow list of websites that you can comment on. Plus, how hard is it to write a small comment on a bunch of blogs every day? The second goal being to do it regularly on a bunch of blogs to get in the top commentator list. Not a hard thing to do if you comment daily.

So now that I had my plan, I decided to get myself a caffine refill and begin.

STEP 1: Find a doFollow list
This one was easy as I am already part of Andy’s doFollow movement.

STEP 2: Go through list and start commenting on posts!
So I begin going through my list. I go to the first blog and it is on a similer topic to this one. I read all the posts on the front page and find one that interests me enough to comment so I do. I notice that I just spent 20 mins doing so.

Note to self, need to speed this up or it’s going to take hours.

I go to the next site. It has nothing on it of interest to me. I skip this one and go to the next.

Again, Bill’s blog about batteries does not interest me even though I try to find a post that does. I could just comment on any post, but is that the right thing to do? Isn’t there already enough crap on the net without me adding to it?

Then I realize this is going to be an impossible task for me. I don’t comment daily on the blogs I read daily. How am I going to do it on a bunch of blogs I don’t care to read? I know this is supposed to be purely for build links back here, but that does not sit well with me. Other people are working hard on these blogs, I don’t need to clutter them up with off topic comments.

So I end my experiment with a failure. I cannot turn my mind off long enough to do it. Running this blog is work, but it is fun also. I’m not spending hours a day doing a boring task that adds nothing to this blog or the blogs of others. Seems a little seedy to me.

Is it worth it? Not to me. I would rather just keep producing content and hope that people find and enjoy it. If it takes longer than I can live with that. I’d rather get linked back because of something we wrote, rather than wasting time.

I wouldn’t advertise my car for sale in a gardening magazine. Maybe I need to work on being a little more evil?
