Your credit rating did not go down the tubes overnight, and will not come back overnight either. It takes time and patience, but hopefully you have learned some things about credit during your tough times, so now is the time to rebuild your credit to the point where it needs to be, so you can function in today's fast-paced society.

Hmm, I wasn't aware that ppl actually did scams such as using a tax as their ss#. Pretty clever imo. But in the end, doesn't it show a business name whenever a creditor pulls the credit file?

I know that in the U.S. the biggest scam is to have people create new Tax ID's. This is typically used to start up a business entity to begin building credit for your business. It's not against the law to do this. However when you begin establishing credit for yourself under this Tax ID and not your Social Security Number, than this is considered fraud. The Credit Repair service did nothing wrong by setting this up for you, but you committed fraud when you started using it. Watch out! Not sure if this applies in Canada or not, but I'm sure you will have some U.S. readers come along (like me!).

credit schmedit! You can spend as much money as you want. Do you know how many people i have come across that have filed bankruptcy applied for more credit right after and had gotten approved. Credit is easy, dont sweat the little things in life. Go ahead and splurge, I hear they are printing more and more money everyday.

Creditors and their agents (collection agencies) are relentless in their pursuit of money. Your money. Well actually, it's theirs, which they have loaned to you on a promise to repay. And, because of circumstances, you need some help.Enlisting the services of a non profit such as Consumer Credit Counseling Services will not hurt your credit per se. What can lower your credit scores is when the counseling service arranges a payment schedule with the creditor at a level less than the actual payment, the account(s) will show as delinquent on your credit report, until the debt is paid. In no case will this cause as much, or as long lasting damage to your credit as a Bankruptcy.

While it's true that the best way to repair your credit is to pay your bills on time, there are also ways that you can remove some of the bad items from your report, as well as removing erroneous items. It always pays to do as much research as possible before writing off the possibilities that are actually there. I do agree, however, that it is not wise to use many of the so-called credit repair services out there. Many don't work as well as they claim, if at all. Besides, you can do the same things for free.
