Moms do tend to get smarter as we get older, don’t they? 😉 I also find myself using ways to save money that my mother used that used to drive me crazy. One such tip is never running the dryer with less than a full load. If clothes didn’t make it to the laundry in time to be washed and dried with all the others, they didn’t get laundered. That’s a tough rule for a girl with only two pairs of “favorite” jeans! But it taught me a lesson I use today so I guess Mom’s tough love made an impression.

These are good ideas. My mom uses bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar to clean everything in the house: she used to tell us that the chemical cleaning products were expensive… Now that I’m the one who’s going to the supermarket, I understand her point of view…

I so appreciate this post because there were so many frugal things that my mom and dad did when I was growing up that I didn’t understand until I had a family of my own. My mom was always reusing plastic bags and rinsing off the aluminum foil to use again. And we *always* bought generic. It seems the store brands have come a long way since then – or maybe, like you said, my taste buds have simply matured. In some things, such as cereals and granola bars, my kids actually prefer the store brands to the name brands.

My mother is my money saving super hero. I can relate to your thoughts of how lame your mother was to do what you thought were silly things. I felt the same way. I take pride in using what I’ve learned from her to give my family more. Thanks for the tribute to your own Mom!

Try to find out how much you have actually spent on dining out and having lunch with your family when you could have saved money by cooking food in your kitchen.
