I've just entered the market for new furniture. I agree with the part where you say you will have something to cherish if you have to repair it. It goes along with the the philosophy that if you buy it with your own money you will take better care of it. You put your time, energy, and money into making a piece nice, you will take better care of it and it will have more sentimental value. Such a clutch post.
