Upgrading to a house

Filed under: Personal Finance — Aimee @ 10:47 pm

Well its official, Johnny and I are selling the condo. It goes on the market tomorrow morning. We have spent the last 4 days getting ready for tomorrow. I have never spent so much time cleaning and organizing in my life. It takes a lot of work to sell a condo. That is unless you are already clean and organized. Then i guess it’s easy.

I didn’t realize how much stuff we actually had until this weekend. We threw out or stored away anything that we did not immediately need in the next couple of months.

I have probably spent about 25 hours this weekend alone getting this place ready. I think it will be well worth it when people come here. They will be focused on the features of the apartment and not the clutter.

Soon we will have a house and will have more room to spread our selves out so there will not be so much clutter…at least at first. Free storage space will be a definite perk while living in a house.

We’re planning on getting a house with a basement appartment so that we can rent it out and pay some of our mortgage off early. I will let you know how the process of selling this condo goes.

Congratulations and good luck. I think the rental basement idea is great. With my first house I liked that I could do that (separate entrance, bathroom…) in case I needed to. Such a setup can provide a margin of safety, or if you rent it out right away, can start adding to your overall financial health right away.

The part I really love about moving is getting into a new place. However, I can’t stand selling a house. I’ve done it once already - and man on man it’s a pain. I recall once sitting down to dinner just when the door bell rang. An agent had not bothered to call for a showing. So my wife and I threw all of our dinner, plates and all into the oven, and threw some clothes ove r our pajamas and then went out with our four year old for a hot chocolate! Fortunately we had the BEST agent in the world and he sold our house in 20 days!

Good luck in the new place - you’ll love having your own space. Remember - passive income is the best kind - so try and stick to your goal of renting the basement!
