Use a prepaid credit card to build your credit
So your son just turned 16 and got his very first job and finally has some cash to buy whatever he wants. He wants that neat ipod he saw on Ebay but you don’t want to lend him your credit card and he doesn’t have a credit history to get a card of his own.
No problem! Much music now has a prepaid mastercard. No credit needed! Your son (or daughter) puts money on the card up front, and then will be able to use it like a regular credit card except that they won’t be borrowing money from anyone. This will give him (or her) the freedom to shop online whenever he wants.
I’m almost tempted to sign up for one myself. The only 2 reasons I still have a credit card are so that I can make online purchases, and to keep the long history that I have with my current card company. The fact that I could never get myself back into debt with a prepaid card is a major plus. I could use it as my emergency fund instead of borrowing money from the bank.
This card is also a great idea for anyone who has bad credit. You can use it to start rebuilding your credit history, and will still have all the freedom that a regular credit card can give you.
