What’s stopping me from getting a page rank?

Filed under: How to Drive Traffic — Aimee @ 10:52 pm

If you’ve recently started a site and have been trying desperately to get a page rank, and no matter what you do there seems to be no change in your rating of zero, you know there has even been a page rank update and still nothing has happened! You may be asking “Why the hell can’t I get a page rank? Am I doing it all wrong?”. The answer is that you could be doing everything right and still not be seeing any results. Do not get frustrated, you are probably stuck in the google sandbox.

How did you get there? One reason that people end up there is because their site is new. Another reason might be that they have obtained a large amount of backlinks in a short period of time. This could raise a red flag to google that they are purchasing links or obtaining them in some other unnatural way.

How long will I be stuck in the Google sandbox?
It is said that those who become stuck in the sandbox will never come our alive…just kidding! You will probably be stuck there for about 6-8 months so it may take some time before you see the results of your optimizing and linking efforts. Unfortunatly all you can do is wait. This means that you should not rely solely on google for your traffic, especially in the beginning.

Here are some alternative methods for increasing traffic to your site in the mean time:

Pay per click - sites where you can bid on each click and visit to your site. The payments can range from a few cents to a few dollars per click depending on the competition.

Other search engines - Focus on alternative search engines like Yahoo, or MSN that don’t have a sandbox for you to get stuck in.

I’m doing okay on Google with a PR5. However, I’m not even in Ask and I’m very low in Live Search and Yahoo!. All of my search engine traffic is from Google.

You will get rank and all the work will be worthwhile cause once you have it, it’s very hard to get rid of unless you do something stupid.

People say that links from “authority sites” can help get a new site out of the sandbox faster. There is no specific definition of “authority sites” but basically sites that are trusted by Google… This doesn’t really help that much but still the common belief is that the sandbox stay can be limited with the right incoming links.

i think you need to clarify things a little:
there’s no connection between sandbox and PR. PR is not directly related to sandbox and SERP

so, i guess slow and steady is the way to go with page-ranks. i guess i never realized that a quick ramp up might be red-flag. thanks for the heads up.

It is also beneficial to get links from sites that are related to your topics and also have high PR. I know it is hard to find them sometimes, but Google places more weight on related sites than just random links.

That is interesting, so people that go at it aggressively with a new site might be shooting themselves in the foot.

For John Hunter, authority sites pretty much always have high PR

Google sandbox can be as long as 18 month. My website traffic mostly also from google. but when the time come, I will focus on email marketing.

I guess just being patient is what works best. In the meantime, you might as well work on your site to make it better.

You misunderstood the whole idea: sandbox and PR has nothing to do one with the other. You can increase easily PR and still not rank for your desired keywords.
And sandbox is not taking 18 months if you develop a seo strategy…no way

      I recently changed the website,

it takes ages before it sees that the old links are gone. Even when using a sitemap.

It took my website almost 2 months to see that all the old links were gone.

So this is why even though my site is a bit popular with my community and is getting a decent amount of traffic from Yahoo, Alexa and Technorati, I still don’t have a PR. Thanks for this! :)

Great advice. I have to get more on the ball or I should say more proactive in terms of driving traffic. I rely on google for most of it and we all know how fickle that can be.
